The Acting SRC President of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council, Nana Kwame Amo Ntow Fianko, has been warned by Management of the University of Ghana to be mindful of the consequences of swearing into office, the defeated UGSRC Presidential aspirant, Samuel Amos Ofosu (popularly known as Nana B) into office as UGSRC President.

It will be recalled that on Saturday, December 25, 2021, the Ag. SRC President, Nana Kwame Amo Ntow Fianko, issued a statement declaring Samuel Amos Ofosu (Nana B) as UGSRC President-elect. This is despite the fact that Samuel Amos Ofosu (Nana B) suffered defeat at the hands of the legitimate UGSRC President-elect, Prince Asumadu, at the runoff election held on October 29, 2021.

But in a letter addressed to Nana Kwame Amo Ntow Fianko by the Registrar of the University on behalf of University Senior Management, Nana Kwame Amo Ntow Fianko has been warned to take note of the pending High Court suit filed by the legitimate President-elect, Prince Asumadu, and be mindful of the dire consequences he and his team will face when they go ahead to swear in illegitimate SRC executives.

Many have wondered why the outgoing Acting UGSRC President, who has secured the backing of the Dean of Student Affairs, is desperately trying to steal the mandate of students and swear into office, someone who suffered heavy defeat at the UGSRC presidential polls conducted last October. Some high ranking officers in the UGSRC, who have pleaded for anonymity, believe that the outgoing Ag. UGSRC President, Mr. Ntow Fianko, is doing all that he can to put his favorite, Samuel Amos Ofosu into office to cover up the massive financial mismanagement and embezzlement that characterized his tenure in office. It is reported that it is for this same reason that the controversial Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Godfred Bokpin, is also supporting the illegal actions of the outgoing Ag. UGSRC President, Mr. Fianko- since the financial mismanagement and embezzlement by the Ntow Fianko administration went on under his supervision as Dean of Student Affairs.

Reports available to LegonOnline indicate that the justices of the SRC Judicial Board namely Regina Apaloo CJ, Anne Accorley JSC, Maame Esi Nkrumah Abamfo JSC, Prince-Obed Ihara Balika JSC and Wesley Gomado have received 1,000 Ghana cedis each from the camp of SRC Presidential candidate Samuel Amos Ofosu (Nana B) and ably supported by the Dean of Students, to declare an online rerun of the runoff in the Mensah Sarbah Hall.

Following the completion of the report by the committee set up by the Dean of Students, reports reaching LegonOnline suggest that Master Prince Asumadu won the election legitimately and must be sworn in as quickly as possible to restore student representation.

However since the Dean of Students has been already compromised to rig the election against Prince Asumadu, he has been at the end of all attempts to frustrate processes to prevent Prince Asumadu from being sworn in.

Students of the University of Ghana are appealing to authorities to intervene and sanitize the process.

We always thought the threshold would be so far from us. We prided ourselves in our overheated imaginations that we would never get to this point. But reality has once again dawned, and we are faced with the unadulterated truth that indeed, NO ONE CARES!!

It now appears our voices are all we are left with, else we become the sufferers of insensitivity and victims of self-interestedness.

Accomodation on campus as it stands, has become much expensive than the reason it is being provided. In some halls, students are scheduled to pay almost twice of what they used to pay.
Ordinarily, the views of students were to be sought through the representation of the SRC President at certain key meetings under which these amounts were finalized.

But unfortunately, we have an expired SRC President who is being supported to hold on to power by management under the guise of a committee of senior members set up to investigate alleged ‘election fraud’. The committee has failed to meet timelines set by themselves to submit their report. All we have received from management is flowery speech indicating no course of action. The SRC is in crisis.

We now have a National Service Personnel as our President. And as expected, he has failed to attend all these important meetings and so the views of students were not represented in any of these deliberations.
Students in the Diaspora (Limann, Kwapong, Sey and Nelson) are scheduled to pay GHc1,490.00 a semester, making the residential fee for the academic year now GHc2,980.00, 20 Ghana Cedis short of GHc3,000.00. How did we get here?

Yet, the competition for residential slots gets keener by the day. Most students are programmed to lose their residential status next academic year mainly because the university will depart from the double-track module and return to the normal semester system. Freshers are expected to come in at the same time. All students who gained accommodation through the double track system are bound to lose it. The University is already heading towards a crisis, and the increase of residential fees only makes this imminent crisis more cataclysmic.  

Several letters have been written to the school’s management to intervene in this looming crisis, but no response has been received.

There is a residential board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 7th December 2021. And since our SRC President and his group of executives are busy with their National Service duties, the over 40,000 students of the University of Ghana will still not have a voice where it matters.

Management has unfortunately fallen into a deep sleep, and students are left to face our fates alone. We may probably have to remind them that most of us fend for ourselves. We may probably have to remind the management of University of Ghana that most of us cannot make the best of grades because we combine unstable work schedules with studying, just to be able to survive and pay our fees.

We may probably have to remind the management of the University of Ghana of the ordeal many parents go through to be able to pay the fees of their wards – and that it is highly insensitive to sit and watch the cost of on-campus accommodation to hit the roof at a time as this when many enterprises are still struggling to find their feet in the global economic turbulence.

Dear University of Ghana student, until these outrageous prices are reviewed, YENTUA!!
We cannot afford to pay close to double of what we used to pay with no justification. YENTUA!!
We will not be cowed into silence even if our SRC leadership seems directionless. YENTUA!!

I urge all students to hold on with the payment of their residential fees until all these issues are resolved.

If all we have left now is our voices, and we will use them until we lose them.
It costs absolutely nothing to be sensitive.

CONCERNED UNIVERSITY OF GHANA STUDENTS

The disquiet in the University of Ghana over the alleged bias of the Dean of Student Affairs and ‘Illegal’ Acting SRC President will reach its peak this Monday, 21st November 2021, as thousands of University of Ghana students are set to flood the streets of the University to strikingly register their displeasure with the way and manner which the Dean of Students, Prof Godfred Alufar Bopkin, in connivance with the ‘illegal’ acting SRC President, Kwame Amo Ntow Fianko are deliberately delaying the transition period to create problems for the next administration because their preferred candidate could not win the SRC elections.

It can be recalled that University of Ghana students went to the polls on Friday, 29th October 2021 to elect a new crop of leaders for the next academic year.

However before the election, concerns were raised about the actions and inactions of the Dean of Students and the Acting SRC President that sought to do everything possible to support the Nana B and Mr Acquah ticket.

3 weeks after the election, there has been no roadmap for transition and no communication whatsoever between the outgoing and incoming administrations.

UG students are worried mainly because they fear their views will not be represented at key board meetings to discuss academic and residential fee increments and other key issues concerning them.

For many students, Monday’s demonstration is a platform to vent their grievances and plead with the school management to step in and salvage the looming crisis.
